About The Spine Tumor Service
As the founder and co-director of the Spine Tumor Service of the Department of Orthopaedics at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Pedlow helped organize the first Spine Tumor Service dedicated to the treatment of bone tumors of the spine in New England. It remains the only fully integrated, multidisciplinary orthopaedic spine tumor center in Boston and all of New England. The Spine Tumor Service is a regional, national and international referral center for primary tumors of the spine and treats patients from not only Massachusetts but throughout New York, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. The center also evaluates and treats patients from across the United States and internationally.
Specialized Care, Expertise and Experience
The Spine Tumor Service specializes in the treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the osseous spine, including:
- chordomas
- chondrosarcomas
- osteosarcomas
- other primary sarcomas
- metastatic disease
- other tumors
Multidisciplinary Spine Tumor Patient Care
The MGH Orthopaedic Spine Service works with the Orthopaedic Oncology Service, and in conjunction with the Center for Sarcoma & Connective Tissue Oncology of the Massachusetts General Hospital. This multidisciplinary approach allows for the utilization of the combined expertise of multiple sub-specialties in the evaluation and treatment of primary and metastatic osseous tumors of the spine. The services involved include:
- Orthopaedic Spine Surgeons. Fellowship trained spine surgeons, experienced in the most modern techniques of spine tumor en-bloc resection and spinal reconstruction.
- Orthopaedic Oncology. The largest group of its type in New England, and one of the largest Orthopaedic Oncology Services in the world.
- Radiation Oncology. Advanced treatment capabilities, including intra-operative radiation therapy, IMRT and Proton Beam Therapy when indicated.
